Season 2016 start : Discovering the Gironde estuary...

Tuesday, March 22, 2016, is the kickoff of the 2016 season with a group of 8 people leaving from Jonzac. Drive to the banks of the Gironde Estuary for a nice discovery tour with a splendid spring sunshine.

First, a stop at St Fortunat Church in St Fort sur Gironde to admire its exceptional Romanesque portal. Then direction Mortagne sur Gironde through the marshes where storks and grey herons are waiting for you in this spring period. Steering the cliff where the sun gave us a beautiful view over the harbor and the estuary.

Then we took the road to reach Talmont to visit the village which is far from being overcrowded by the summer tourists.... Proof is: the parking is still free in this season! Number of shops are still closed but the scenery is gorgeous even without the hollyhocks, the warm color of the limestone will provise us beautiful pictures.

Gourmet break in the tea room called "Les Délices de l'Estuaire" for a gourmet coffee with the specialty: Gatopineau which got the special mention of the competition jury of the regional gourmet challenge in the Poitou-Charentes in 2009.

Finally, fesh air and salted sprays at the Pointe de Suzac which is both an important historical site with remains of fortifications lateXIX° century and bunkers of the Atlantic Wall to protect the entrance to the Gironde estuary and access to occupied Bordeaux. Last stop at the lighthouse of St Georges de Didonne to evoke the "Cockelshell Heroes", this British commando of 10 men who have embarked on the mission to undermine Sperrbrechers docked in Bordeaux in 1942, up the Gironde estuary aboard kayaks.
